Broadcasters Remember Dick Clark's CNY Connections

SYRACUSE and UTICA -- As you've no doubt heard by now, broadcast icon Dick Clark died today at the age of 82.  And you read here this afternoon that Clark's legendary career started right here in Central New York, first at WRUN radio in Utica, then WOLF in Syracuse, then back to WRUN and onto his first TV experience at Utica's WKTV.  Tonight, some local broadcasters share their reflections -- and photos -- from crossing paths with "America's oldest teenager" over the years. Broadcast Icon Dick Clark Dies at 82, Started Career in Utica

LOS ANGELES -- Broadcast personality Dick Clark, best known for shows like American Bandstand, the game show Pyramid and the annual New Year's Rockin Eve specials on ABC, has died following a "massive heart attack" this morning in California.  Clark, who was 82, made his very first appearances on radio and television in Utica, and graduated from Syracuse University. UTICA -- Typical "small market" TV stations are often described as "revolving doors" in the TV news biz... many rookie reporters just want to build a good resume tape and move to a bigger market.  WKTV, however, has long been an exception.  Quite a few staffers have called WKTV home for years, even decades.  Primary anchor Bill Worden just reached 35 years with the NBC affiliate. Roser Hires Midday Talent for WUTQ

UTICA-ROME -- Although listeners first discovered WUTQ's expansion to the 100.7FM frequncy about ten days ago, Roser Communications Network officially announced the changes Monday night.  In addition, the company says it has hired Taylor Harris to host the music hours heard middays on the four-frequency simulcast. Syracuse Press Club Names Award Winners

Updated 8:05pm -- SYRACUSE -- Public stations WRVO and WAER dominate the list of radio winners for the 2011 Syracuse Press Club Professional Recognition Awards Contest.  On the TV news side, cablecaster YNN and Syracuse ABC affiliate NewsChannel 9 were neck-and-neck for bragging rights on picking up the most awards.  The list was released just this afternoon, and awards will be conferred at the SPC's annual banquet in May. WIBX and WKTV Help Raise $1.1 Million for Heart Association

UTICA-ROME -- They call it "America's Greatest Heart Weekend," and it all started with the annual WIBX Heart Radiothon 41 years ago.  Since then, the radiothon and a run have been joined by a walk, a health expo and NBC affiliate WKTV's Heart Telethon.  Working together, the events raised more than $1.1 Million for the American Heart Association. WKTV Morning Anchor Leaving for Baltimore

UTICA -- After six years of climbing Smith Hill every morning while most of us sleep, WKTV morning co-anchor Megan Koskovich is leaving the NBC affiliate shortly after the current February sweeps period ends.  She's making a rather big jump up the TV market ladder, but she likely won't be seen on-camera. Tom Coyne Out at WKTV After 17 Years

Updated 12:45pm with station confirmation. UTICA -- Most TV program directors usually aren't "known" to the public, but it's a safe bet anyone who has ever watched WKTV has at least heard the voice of Tom Coyne, and if you watched enough, you may have actually seen him appearing on-camera.  CNYTVNews.com has learned from multiple sources that, after 17 years, Coyne has exited the NBC affiliate.  (more…)

WKTV to Air Humane Society Telethon

UTICA -- NBC affiliate NewsChannel 2 (WKTV) is devoting much of the day tomorrow to a worthy local cause. From noon to 8pm, the station will broadcast a telethon to benefit the Stevens-Swan Humane Society. It's the animal shelter's biggest fundraiser each year. (more…)
