UTICA-ROME -- Today was the last day for Gary "Big Poppa" Spears on morning drive at Kiss-FM (WSKS/WSKU). A press release from the CHR station late this afternoon says Spears "has left the building."
Spears had also served as Promotions Director for the two-station simulcast. That second title has been passed along to middayer Jesse Jordan. No replacement has been named for the morning show.
Program Director Shaun Andrews says, “We thank Gary for all the work he has done with the station and we are looking forward to finding that next great talent to shake up mornings in Central New York.”
Jordan adds, “We’re looking forward to a great rest of 2009 with a whole new attitude towards promotions!”
Until a new morning show replacement is named, the existing staff will be pulling longer shifts. Jordan will hold down 6am to noon, Andrews takes the next six hours, and "Intern Dave" has 6pm to midnight. Jordan tells CNYRadio.com the split was a mutual agreement between Spears and the station.
Spears has been in Utica-Rome radio on and off for at least 10 years. Among his stops prior to Kiss-FM, Spears held down the morning spot at the former Rock 107 (WRCK) and further back, he was known as "Hollywood Hopper" while playing country tunes at Regent's Big Frog 104 (WFRG).
