SYRACUSE -- Not too many people can say they've had the opportunity to climb on top of the Carrier Dome -- but CNY Central Chief Meterologist Wayne Mahar and reporter Chris McGrath are among the handful of Central New Yorkers who can make that claim. Our thanks to Wayne for sending in our latest Picture of the Week installment.
Here are Wayne and Chris standing on next to the flagpole which sits above the Dome. They made the climb in January, after instrumentation atop the dome registered wind speeds of 105mph, breaking the previous record of 78mph.
In an article published on CNYCentral.com at the time, Mahar explained what the process involved with reaching the top of the Dome, and a little bit about the science behind how the wind managed to get going at that kind of speed. Carrier Dome maintenance staff also had to adjust the indoor air pressure to prevent the roof from trying to "lift up and off."
CNYCentral consists of NBC 3 (WSTM), CBS 5 (WTVH) and CW6 (WSTQ-LP).
