UTICA/ROME -- The 38th Annual WIBX Heart Radiothon just ended moments ago at Utica College. As of 1pm, the combined total raised during Heart Weekend events stood at $1,164,260. The money benefits the American Heart Association.
WIBX was broadcasting live from Utica College yesterday and today. As per the usual tradition, current WIBX staffers were joined by co-workers from WIBX's sister stations and retired WIBX personalities, as well as cardiac health experts and others from the American Heart Association.
Although the 7-figure total represents the combined total from several efforts, including the Heart Run/Walk and the Heart Telethon held by WKTV, many often forget the Radiothon started it all. The original Heart Run and Radiothon was held 38 years ago, in memory of Ralph Allinger, a WIBX employee who died of heart disease.
The WIBX host signing off (he didn't identify himself, but it sounded like Gene Conte) says the actual total raised by the radiothon itself, will be announced on Monday. Pledges are still being accepted on WIBX's website as of 1:15 Saturday afternoon. Last year's radiothon accounted for $17,000 of the grand total.
