SYRACUSE -- Fans of recently-retired longtime WSTM news anchor Jackie Robinson are staging a celebration in her honor. The celebration will be held later this month at the Oncenter.
Here's the press release submitted by organizers to CNYTVNews.com:
Central New Yorkers who trusted Jackie Robinson to give them live, local and late breaking news for over three decades at WSTM will have the chance to give her a fitting tribute.
The career and legacy of Jackie Robinson will be celebrated on Thursday, November 29, 2012 at the Oncenter Ballroom, 800 S. State St. in Syracuse.
“Jackie has served this community not only, on the air, but through the many charitable activities she was engaged in, and truly deserves this honor,” said Jean Phillips of the Jackie Robinson Retirement Celebration Committee. Tickets for the event are $75.00 each, or $750.00 for a table of 10. Checks and contributions should be made payable to the Jackie Robinson Retirement Celebration.
“I am honored and humbled that the community would choose to recognize me in this way,” said Robinson. Among her many awards, perhaps the most prestigious is her recent induction into the New York State Broadcaster’s Hall of Fame. For reservations and ticket information, please contact Jean Philips at 315.425.1316, or cell 315.436.1925.
Robinson retired in September after more than 35 years with WSTM. She started working for the NBC affiliate as a part-time newsroom secretary while she was still in high school. After graduating from Syracuse University, Robinson worked her way up the ladder from reporter to weekend anchor, to primary weekday co-anchor.
