SYRACUSE -- The CNY Central cluster (NBC3/WSTM-TV, CBS5/WTVH and CW6) is looking to hire a newscast producer. And thanks to a new state law that requires employers to include salary details in job postings, we now get to see how much they're offering.
The posting provided by Sinclair Broadcast Group to CNYRadio/CNYTVNews says "the base hourly compensation range for this role is $14.86 to $16.86 per hour."
Considering that New York State minimum wage currently stands at $14.20/hr, this is somewhat surprising, especially when the posting says candidates "must have at least some previous news producing experience at a commercial TV station," and goes on to say "a journalism degree is preferred."
Putting that into perspective, Dunkin' is advertising $17-24/hour for "Donut Production Associates" in Syracuse. No degree or previous experience required - you just need to show up as scheduled, and demonstrate an ability to follow directions.
To be fair, the CNYCentral posting also says "final compensation for this role will be determined by various factors such as a candidates’ relevant work experience, skills, certifications, and geographic location," but this editor wonders why the posting doesn't just offer a range that accounts for these factors in the first place.
OK, enough editorializing: for those interested, here is the verbatim job posting as provided by CNYCentral, complete with a link to apply near the bottom.
