FCC Cancels License for WDOS Oneonta

ONEONTA — Another AM radio station bites the dust. The Federal Communications Commission earlier this week approved Townsquare Media’s request to cancel the broadcast license for Oneonta’s 730 WDOS.

The cancellation was long anticipated, as Townsquare actually shut off the former news/talker’s signal a year ago.

According to FCC records, the WDOS license was officially cancelled (and changed to “DWDOS,” with the prefix D for “deleted”) as of June 4. This, after Townsquare submitted a “Cancellation Application” on May 28.

According to Wikipedia, Townsquare already “replaced” WDOS, in a way, by flipping WKXZ 93.9 Norwich from hot AC to a simulcast of established news/talker WNBF out of Binghamton last summer.

Yes, Oneonta’s a bit outside of our normal radio coverage area, but we still considered this noteworthy since Oneonta is part of the Utica TV market, and because Townsquare also has a radio cluster in Utica. According to their websites, stations in both markets are overseen by the same manager, Mary Beth Walsh.

In the Utica market, Townsquare’s only AM station is long-running news/talker 950 WIBX, which has an FM simulcast on translator 92.3FM. The cluster (when it was owned by Regent) also used to include the former WRUN 1150, but that was sold off in 2005 and changed hands a few more times since then before going silent in 2013 (as WUTI) and having its license automatically cancelled a year later.
