PxP Broadcaster for SU Hoops NCAA Tourney Debut Dies

SYRACUSE — When Syracuse University’s mens basketball season made their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance in 1957, Gerald Hoffman was behind the mic to call the action for WAER-FM. Hoffman, who graduated that year, passed away on Sunday at the age of 90.

According to his obituary, “After college graduation, he was a sports reporter for the Syracuse Post-Standard, sports publicity director at Le Moyne College, a radio-TV reporter and announcer for WSYR Radio and Television and Assistant Director of the News Bureau at Syracuse University.”

Hoffman was also a past treasurer of the Syracuse Press Club.

Hoffman leaves behind a wife, two children and four grandchildren. Calling hours are set for Friday, July 3 at Holy Cross Church in DeWitt from 9:45 to 10:45am, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:00am.
