SYRACUSE -- Nominees and Hall of Fame inductees for the Syracuse Area Music Awards (a.k.a. "the SAMMYs") were announced yesterday during a press conference at the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que. Sunny 102 (WZUN) morning man "Big Mike" Fiss had the honor of announcing the list of SAMMY nominees.
SYRACUSE -- Observant CNYRadio.com readers have noticed something interesting on their TV screens: program listings for WSYR-DT's 9.2 subchannel show timeslots devoted to local hosts from Newsradio 570 WSYR... but so far, neither host has appeared on TV during their respective listed timeslots. SYRACUSE -- According to the Syracuse Press Club, the 10pm newscast on CW6 (WSTQ-LP) will expand from 30 minutes to a full hour starting tonight. SPC says Lisa Spitz will join Matt Mulcahy as producer and co-anchor.
SYRACUSE -- It's a busy two weeks for ABC affiliate NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV). Right after 12 days of extensive coverage from the New York State Fair, it's the MDA Labor Day Telethon, followed the very next day by the addition of two more newscasts.
SYRACUSE -- The money CBS affiliate WTVH-TV saved by shutting down its newsroom and moving in with channel 3 has apparently been piling up -- enough for Channel 5 to take over the market's affiliation contract for Live! With Regis and Kelly away from longtime affiliate NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV).
SYRACUSE -- Longtime sportscaster Claude "Red" Parton has died, according to a report from ABC affiliate NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV). Parton's career spanned more than six decades, starting with WSYR in 1939. He'd eventually work at a number of other radio stations before moving into television.
CENTRAL NEW YORK -- It's awards season for local media! The Radio/Television Digital News Association recently announced its regional winners, and the Syracuse Press Club recently announced its full slate of award winners, recognizing excellence in journalism during 2009.
SYRACUSE -- Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 25th: that's the date set for the 5th Annual Bill Leaf Memorial Kickball Tournament. The event raises money for broadcasting scholarships while remembering the Newsradio 570 WSYR broadcaster who was killed by a drunk driver in 2006.
