Where’s TelAuc? WCNY-TV Moves Auction to June May 25th, 2011 SYRACUSE — One of the biggest, most prominent fundraisers for public broadcaster WCNY was notably absent in April. TelAuc, the station’s annual televised auction, usually happens during April. Fans may have noticed this year, April came and went… no TelAuc. But fans need not worry: the station simply decided to postpone the auction until June.
Muir Gives Ithaca College Commencement Speech May 23rd, 2011 ITHACA — David Muir returned to his alma mater yesterday to share an inspirational message. NewsChannel 9 Posts News Director Opening May 19th, 2011 SYRACUSE — Almost two weeks following the sudden resignation of longtime News Director Jim Tortora, ABC affiliate NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV) has officially posted an opening for a News Director on its website. Among other requirements, the announcement requires candidates have at least five years of news management experience.
CBS Reporter Axelrod, Formerly of CNY, Pens Book May 14th, 2011 NEW YORK CITY — CBS News national correspondent Jim Axelrod has a new book, released earlier this week. Jim Tortora Exits ND Post at NewsChannel 9 May 10th, 2011 Updated 5/19 — SYRACUSE — According to multiple sources, Jim Tortora has exited NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV) after more than a decade at the station. We’re told General Manager Theresa Underwood sent an email memo to staff on Monday afternoon, thanking Tortora for his time with the station, and wishing him well in the future.
WTVH 5.1 Transmitter Down, Temp Move to 3.3 May 9th, 2011 Updated 5/10 at 11:00pm – CNYcentral says the WTVH 5.1 transmitter is back in operation tonight, but it’s just temporary. To complete the repairs, additional parts will be installed at the transmitter on Wednesday. As a result, WTVH 5.1 will sign off again on Wednesday morning, but engineers hope to have it back online —
Syracuse Press Club 2011 Award Winners Named May 8th, 2011 SYRACUSE — Top journalists from Syracuse and surrounding markets gathered for the Syracuse Press Club’s 33rd annual Scholarship and Professional Recognition Awards Dinner last night at Drumlins Country Club in Syracuse. Public stations WRVO and WAER dominated the radio categories, while there were plenty of ties for winners in the television categories.
WCNY-TV Produces Series on Well Being May 8th, 2011 SYRACUSE — Starting this Thursday, WCNY-TV will air a five-part series called “Focus: Well Being,” designed to “help viewers understand and cope with stressful problems such as weight disorders, paying for college, and prostate cancer.” Viewer questions will be taken via telephone and internet during each program.
Where Are They Now: Dan Hoard Joins NFL’s Bengals May 5th, 2011 CINCINNATI — Former WSYR570 sports director and WTVH-5 sportscaster Dan Hoard has been tapped by the NFL’s Cincinnati Bengals for radio play-by-play duties starting with the team’s preseason games this summer. He’ll be joining fellow SU grad Dave Lapham, who will be entering his 26th season providing color commentary.
