SYRACUSE -- Nominees and Hall of Fame inductees for the Syracuse Area Music Awards (a.k.a. "the SAMMYs") were announced yesterday during a press conference at the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que. Sunny 102 (WZUN) morning man "Big Mike" Fiss had the honor of announcing the list of SAMMY nominees.
SYRACUSE -- We continue to track down details about local winners from the New York State Broadcasters Association's 44th Annual Excellence in Broadcasting awards. Thanks to one of his co-workers, we've learned TK99/105 (WTKW/WTKV) morning co-host Dave Coombs is on the list. He won his third "Outstanding Sportcast" award at the ceremony on Monday night.
SYRACUSE -- Galaxy Communications says acclaimed blues musician Kenny Wayne Shepherd will headline next month's "Blues, Brews and BBQ" hosted by classic rocker TK99/TK105 (WTKV/WTKW). Organizers have also announced the rest of the lineup, along with ticketing information.

FLORIDA -- A former owner of WSGO(AM) and the man who started WGES-FM has died. Robert Gessner was 86 years old when he passed away in Florida. Today, you might know WGES-FM better as WTKV, the Oswego-based repeater of Galaxy classic rocker TK99 (WTKW). SYRACUSE/UTICA -- It's been 30 years since Dave Frisina started featuring local musicians on his popular show Soundcheck, and this Sunday night, listeners have a rare chance to hear the very first show from 1979.
SYRACUSE -- Starting next week, fans attending Syracuse University basketball games will hear the voice of Galaxy Communications VP/Programming Mimi Griswold over the public address system. The announcement makes her the first woman to become a permanent PA announcer in the Carrier Dome's 30-year history.
