Y94FM, 'The Dog' up in latest ratings

It was a good summer for Y94FM (WYYY). The adult contemporary station moved into fourth place in the Syracuse market for the summer Arbitron ratings period, their best showing in more than three years.

But the format with the most movement looks to be the various blends of rock from across the dial.

Catching Red Sox fever at WTLB

It looks like the excitement over the Red Sox recent wins has reached a fever pitch in Utica-Rome for one, not too bright, fan.

Scott Fybush is reporting that a Boston Red Sox banner was flying from one of WTLB's towers this weekend. Galaxy Communications, which owns the adult standards station, has no idea how it got up there and isn't too thrilled about it either considering the dangers of scaling a 5,000 watt transmitter tower.

WXXE sponsors weekend fundraiser

Syracuse Community Radio WXXE and its all-volunteer staff are sponsoring a two-day concert to help raise funds that will help keep the operation afloat.

Mezzanotte Cafe & Lounge on North Salina Street is where it all happens beginning Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 8 p.m. Featured artists include Ashley Cox, Tom Ward III, Steve Cerio, and Dana Bonn.

Tickets are $10 presale for both days, or $6 at the door each night.

New lineup at Sunny 102

Sunny 102 (WZUN) has shifted its jock roster following Marty Santy's departure.

Santy, who had been the station's afternoon jock for years, left last month to concentrate on his mobile entertainment service. In his place, Ted Bilodeau moves up from evenings to afternoon drive, while Syracuse radio veteran Randy Foxx takes over the evening slot. Foxx got his start in the business 15 years ago as a producer for 'Big Mike' Fiss who hosts the station's morning show.

James Pond profiled on All Access

Stan Soboleski got his start in radio in 1987 after winning an internship with radio station WGES in Oswego where he got to read the weather and answer calls for a week during the night show. 17 years later he's still at it, but now as program director and morning man at Watertown's Froggy 97 (WFRY).

Soboleski, known as James Pond on the air, goes '10 Questions With...' on All Access this week and gives his take on the radio industry and his corner of the world.

WOLF reunion available on CD

For those of you who missed or wish to relive the WOLF radio reunion from this past summer, it's now available on CD.

Bob Mitchell, who along with Lee Goodman organized the event, has made six hours of the reunion broadcast available on a set of 6 CDs which can be ordered through the WOLF Tribute web site.

Mitchell says a video version of the event will also be available soon.

The SU/ESPN connection

If you check the resumes of the folks over at ESPN, you're apt to find a lot of them with references to Syracuse University. The Newhouse school has become somewhat of a feeder of broadcast talent to the Connecticut based sports channel.

Newhouse dean David Rubin points to play-by-play experience on WAER as one of the factors that aid graduates in successfully transitioning to the world of professional sports broadcasting.

Old tricks for a new 'Dog'

New Rock 105 'The Dog' (WWDG) has switched from modern rock to a more mainstream rock format.

The Clear Channel Deruyter-licensed Syracuse market station, which has been playing an edgier rock format since its debut nearly two years ago, will focus more on the likes of Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Godsmack.

With the format change the station drops 'New' from its moniker.

Stern heading for satellite radio

Howard Stern is saying goodbye to the FCC and broadcast radio. The syndicated shock jock announced this morning that he has signed a five-year deal with Sirius Satellite Radio where he'll oversee programming on three of the service's channels and host his own morning show.
