'Salty Sam' dead at 74

He went by many names: Salty Sam, Bill Everett, and Epal. Willard Everett Jr. died Sunday at the age of 74 after a long illness.

Everett was probably best known as a children's television entertainer, but during his long Syracuse broadcast career he spent 30 years at 570 WSYR beginning in 1961. He got his start in radio at WAER while attending Syracuse University.

Jim Boeheim goes 2 for 3 on Wait, Wait...

It was a good night for Syracuse University basketball coach Jim Boeheim last Thursday at the Mulroy Civic Center. Boeheim was in the hot seat during a live taping of National Public Radio's Wait, Wait... Don't Tell Me where he managed to get 2 out of 3 questions right in the "Not My Job" segment.

The program aired on NPR stations nationally including the WRVO Stations in Central New York this past weekend.

Lite 98.7 raises over $26,000 for CMN

Lite 98.7 (WLZW) held its fourth annual Children's Miracle Network (CMN) radiothon last week. The final tally was $26,470 as of the close of the radiothon on Friday night. WLZW's three full-time jocks were on the air for 13 hours straight on both Thursday and Friday, on location from the pediatric unit of Saint Luke's Hospital of Utica.

All monies raised will stay local, to maintain and improve pediatric and maternity services at the hospital, along with many regional outpatient offices operated by Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare.

WHEN, WAER staffers part of ESPN reality show

Anish Shroff and Jason Horowitz both survived last night's first round of ESPN's popular reality show Dream Job, a 10-week competition where participants vie for a spot on the ESPN broadcast team.

Shroff, who is a sports anchor on SportsRadio 620 (WHEN) and co-host of The Friday Sports Connection, graduated from Syracuse University in May, while Horowitz, who is still a student at SU, will be making trips to New York City each week for as long as he survives.Both have previously worked for WAER.

Don't 'Wait, Wait' to buy tickets

WRVO FM 90 is bringing the NPR news quiz show Wait, Wait... Don't Tell Me to Syracuse this Thursday night for a live broadcast recording of the weekly program hosted by Peter Sagal.

In addition to the show's roster of regular players including Sue Ellicott and Mo Rocca, Syracuse University basketball coach Jim Boeheim will be in the hot seat for the 'Not My Job' segment. Showtime is 7:30 on Thursday at the Mulroy Civic Center.

Tickets are still available, but the event is expected to sell out.

The 'Cosmic Cowboy' chimes in

Lou Rouviere thinks Syracuse New Times writer Kevin Corbett should broaden his horizons a bit when it comes to country music.

Rouviere, a former WSCP jock known as 'The Cosmic Cowboy', may have moved south a decade ago, but he hasn't given up on artists like David Allan Coe and Guy Clark whom he calls "real country artists writing real country songs."

Jason Kidd on the move again

Former Hot 107-9 (WWHT) jock and program director Jason Kidd is heading back to his hometown of Baltimore.

Kidd, who has had stops in Pittsburgh and Baltimore since leaving Syracuse two and a half years ago, was most recently program director at KOYT in Austin, Texas. His first day of work in Baltimore at Infinity sister station Mix 106-5 (WWMX) is next Tuesday.
