Rick Gary returns to radio

Y94FM (WYYY) has a new morning team. Station management confirmed yesterday that Rick Gary will pair up with Kathy Rowe for the 5-9 a.m. shift beginning next Monday.

Gary, who has a long history in Syracuse radio, recently gave up his morning television duties at WIXT channel 9 where he still plans to unveil a weekday 12:30 show sometime in June.

Press Club presents annual awards

The Syracuse Press Club handed out its annual awards at a dinner on Saturday, May 8.

In the radio division, WSYR, WRVO, WAER, and WHEN all picked up awards. 570 WSYR's assistant news director, Chris Weidman, was also honored with the Selwyn Kershaw Professional Standards Award.

Clear Channel to reduce spot loads

One of the hot issues discussed at a recent two-day meeting of 250 Clear Channel Communications program directors was the amount of commercials and "clutter" airing on the group's radio stations.

Clear Channel president John Hogan says changes are in the works. According to Hogan, the company will "demonstrably reduce the amount of commercial interruptions on our stations."

Sunny 102: Boeheim spots helped ratings

WSYR may pick up Trump show

Donald Trump seems to be everywhere these days, and beginning in June he may be coming to a radio near you.

Trump has partnered with Clear Channel Communications to produce daily 60- to 90-second radio commentaries called "Trumped!"

The Syracuse Post-Standard reports that 570 WSYR will probably carry the segments during Joe Galuski's morning drive shift.

WSEN rebounds in latest ratings

Oldies 92.1 (WSEN) bounced back from its lackluster performance in the fall book and jumped three spots in the rankings to fifth place in numbers released yesterday by Arbitron.

Perennially strong B104.7 (WBBS) proved once again that its spot as the clear leader in the market is unchallenged. The country station's 12.7 rating in 12+ numbers puts it 5.5 points ahead of second place 570 WSYR.

Sunny 102 (WZUN) earned a 3.4 and moved into ninth place with its sixth up book in a row.

WSYR adds to its weekend news staff

There's a new voice in the late night hours of the weekend on 570 WSYR.

Syracuse University sophomore Steve Flamisch, 20, has been named weekend overnight news anchor at the news-talk station. Flamisch worked most recently as a reporter for WAER FM 88 and was a summer reporter/anchor for Millennium Radio New Jersey, a 13-station network in the tri-state area.

The '80s return to Friday nights

Sunny 102 (WZUN) is looking to fill the '80s void on Friday nights.

Beginning this weekend, Sunny 102 is adding two syndicated shows featuring the music from the decade of hair bands and leg warmers to its Friday night lineup. From 7 - 9 p.m. it's Backtrax USA, followed by Nina Blackwood's Absolutely '80s until midnight.

Just last week Y94FM (WYYY) put its locally produced Friday Night at the '80s show on ice after moving John Tesh to weekday evenings.
