Press Club looking for 'Golden Quotes'

The Oswego County Press Club is taking nominations for its annual Golden Quotes Awards. Categories cover areas of journalism and marketing in both print and broadcast media. Nominations are due by November 8. The awards will be presented at the annual Press Club holiday meeting featuring guest host Amy Robbins of 93Q, 6 p.m. Wednesday, December 4, at Springside at Seneca Hill in Minetto.

WRVO raises $106,000 in fall fund drive

1,300 public radio listeners picked up their phones and helped make a difference during WRVO FM 90's eight-day fall on-air fundraising campaign. The calls generated a total of $106,000 in member contributions, and according to Matt Seubert, listener support coordinator for the WRVO network of stations, "Just as important as the dollars pledged was that we heard from over 450 new members." Listener financial support accounts for nearly 40% of WRVO's annual operating budget.

Lite 98.7 names new morning host

Mark Richards will be the new morning voice on Utica's Lite 98.7, replacing Randy Jay, a 13-year veteran of the station who left in late August. Richards hails from State College, PA where he has hosted the number one morning show in the market on WBHV. He has also worked at stations in Saginaw, MI, Erie, PA, as well as his hometown of Buffalo. Richards' takes over on November 14.

Dr. Jennifer Daniels shows up on Stern show

Syracuse native and former city mayoral candidate Dr. Jennifer Daniels popped up on the nationally syndicated Howard Stern Show this morning. In a broadcast phone call from the lobby of the building that houses Stern's New York City studios, Daniels told Howard that she was there to convince one of the show's interns, who is the 22-year-old daughter of a friend, to quit the show. Daniels also managed to squeeze in that she is the Green Party candidate in the race for Lt. Governor of New York.

Art Bell to retire at year's end

Saying that "it's not fair to listeners for me to be gone so much," talk show host Art Bell announced this morning that he will step down as host of his nationally syndicated show Coast to Coast at the end of the year. The reason for his departure is a chronic back condition that prevents him from sitting or standing for the four hour length of his daily show.

With a 1.5 ratings point increase, Oldies 92.1 enjoyed the biggest jump in the summer 12+ numbers released yesterday by Arbitron. Market leader B104.7 is atop the heap once again with a 1.2 point increase, while Citadel's 93Q and 95X saw their best ratings in more than two years.

Paul Harvey to receive lifetime achievement award

Radio and Records has awarded ABC Radio's Paul Harvey the 2003 Lifetime Achievement Award. The award will be presented to the syndicated news host at R&R's Talk Radio Seminar in March. Harvey's newscasts and his Rest of the Story segments air weekdays on 570 WSYR in Syracuse and WARM 93.5 in Utica.

ESPN's Linda Cohn speaks at SU

The Jewish Student Union and the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications of Syracuse University welcome ESPN's Linda Cohn to the Goldstein Auditorium in the Schine Student Center tonight at 7:30. Cohn, who is a graduate of SUNY Oswego, will talk about her work on the cable sports channel including hosting duties for SportsCenter. She is also a contributer to ESPN SportsRadio 1260.
