ALBANY -- Sad news for fans this week, learning of the passing of Annette Funicello. The singer, dancer and actress who grew up in Utica lost a long battle with multiple sclerosis on Monday, at the age of 70. This week, an Ithaca radio personality remembers one special evening decades ago, when the former Mousketeer was his "date" during an Albany radio station event.
SYRACUSE -- If you're looking for jobs in radio or television, WCNY and sister company Joint Master Control Operating Company (JMCO) have a variety of open positions. The public broadcasting operation is hosting a job fair on April 17, at its brand new facilities on West Fayette Street in Syracuse.
Editorial -- For many broadcasters, complex nonlinear editors like Avid, Audition, Premiere, Edius and ProTools are a breeze. But for most, these are toys we only get to play with at work -- they're too expensive to buy a copy for occasional "hobbyist" use at home. For years, Audacity has been a popular open-source multitrack audio editor, but what about video? There is a solution, but it's complicated -- for now. That'll change later this year, and you can help make it happen.
SYRACUSE -- A pair of familiar local talk show co-hosts are back together, for the first time in several years, with a new program set to debut this weekend on WRVO Public Media. Lorraine Rapp and Linda Lowen will discuss health and wellness on "Take Care," every Sunday at 6:30pm.
SYRACUSE -- Rock fans, get ready to head north. K-Rock's Dysfunctional Family BBQ moves to the Oswego Speedway for its 7th year. In addition to that new location, the trio of modern rock stations covering the Syracuse and Utica-Rome markets announced a lineup of six bands for the May 18 concert. Tickets go on-sale this Saturday.
ROCHESTER -- Former WIBX manager Randy Gorbman has a new job in Rochester. After many years as news director at WHAM 1180 in Rochester (which included occasional appearances voicing reports for sister station 570 WSYR in Syracuse), Gorbman has a new job a bit higher up the AM dial.
STATE COLLEGE, PA -- Congratulations are in order for Loren Tobia, former news director at Syracuse CBS affiliate WTVH (1998 to 2005). After WTVH, Tobia went to work in sales for AccuWeather, and this past week, he was promoted to Executive Director of Sales for the company's Display Systems and Services division.
ITHACA -- Q-Country 103.7 (WQNY) is looking for an afternoon drive host. According to the station's website, Robbie Owens is currently on-air weekdays from 3-7pm, but that apparently isn't the station's long term plan, as it has put the call out for applications. Here's the full job description sent to CNYRadio.com:
SYRACUSE -- Taking a jab at its competition by promising "Syracuse basketball coverage that’s NOT controlled by the University’s network," Cumulus Media sports-talker The Score 1260 (WSKO) said it will offer special pre-game and post-game coverage surrounding the Syracuse University men's basketball team's Final Four appearance tomorrow night.
