SYRACUSE -- After filling-in as Interim Program Director at 95X (WAQX) since October, Joe Detomaso has been named the active rock station's permanent PD. Detomaso, who goes by "Joe D" during his midday on-air shift, has been with the station for nine years.
SYRACUSE -- There's been plenty of press about this Wednesday's star-studded "12.12.12 Concert" to benefit for Hurricane Sandy victims. The big show is taking place at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Supporters in Syracuse will be able to enjoy the concert on radio or TV for free... but those in other parts of Central New York may have to make a bit of an effort to find the performances.
HARTFORD, CT -- For more than 40 years, he was known as WTIC sports talk host Arnold Dean. But on WKRT in his hometown of Cortland -- and on Syracuse's former WAGE radio and WHEN-TV -- he used his given name, Arnold D'Angelo. Whichever name you prefer to go with, the legendary "Dean of Sports Talk" passed away over the weekend at the age of 82.
SYRACUSE -- As Mimi Griswold prepares to retire after 20 years with Galaxy Communications -- starting as the program director for K-Rock in 1992, and serving as VP of Programming for the entire company since 1998 -- the programmer received a very special honor today. Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney issued a proclamation declaring today to be "Mimi Griswold Day" throughout Onondaga County.
SYRACUSE -- Last week, Brent Axe revealed that today would be his final day hosting his afternoon sports talk show, On the Block, on The Score 1260 (WSKO). Originally mum about his plans, Axe has revealed he has accepted a new position as "Community Sports Engagement Specialist" with syracuse.com.
UTICA-ROME -- About two months ago, we offered our first "Video of the Week," as staffers at Townsquare Media's Utica-Rome cluster danced and lip-synced to the popular Psy song "Gangnam Style." This week, the gang from Big Frog 104 (WFRG), Oldiez 96.1 (WODZ), Lite 98.7 (WLZW) and news/talker 950 WIBX are back at it again, with a Utica-centric take on the classic "Twelve Days of Christmas."
OSWEGO -- Many people use a new year as a turning point to make changes, and NPR news/talk affiliate WRVO is no exception. The station announced several programming lineup changes today, which will take effect as of the first of the year.
SYRACUSE -- Yesterday was a sad day for jazz fans worldwide, with the news of the passing of legendary jazz artist Dave Brubeck. The musician died in Connecticut, just a day short of his ninety-second birthday. Here in Central New York, hosts at WAER 88.3 went out of their way to demonstrate Brubeck's impact on jazz.
Updated 12/6 at 7:30am with management comment -- SYRACUSE -- When WCNY announced it had hired Jim Reith earlier this year, the public broadcaster laid out grand plans for the longtime local talk host: podcasts, a blog, social media, television and radio. But tonight, there's word that the public broadcasting outlet has released Reith from his duties.
BINGHAMTON -- Former 93Q (WNTQ) jock Matt Johnson -- who went by the name "Jimmy Olsen" when he worked in Syracuse -- has exited the radio business. Johnson was most-recently working for Townsquare Media CHR-formatted station Wild 104.
