'Gooner' takes on role of Gilligan

He's known to Syracuse radio listeners as 'Gooner'. Now Mark Groesbeck of Weedsport is adding to his broadcast resume with a spot on TBS's The Real Gilligan's Island where he stars as one of two Gilligans on the cable network's new reality series.

Groesbeck has been a frequent guest on Scorch's radio show, first on K-Rock (WKRL/WKRH) and then on Rock 105 (WWDG) where he's performed stunts like wrestling ostriches.

Soundcheck turns 25

A quarter of a century ago Dave Frisina launched what would become Central New York's longest running local music show.

To celebrate that milestone, Frisina will host a live two-hour broadcast Sunday night from the Red House in Armory Square featuring "unplugged" performances from Joe Whiting, Jamie Notarthomas, Los Blancos, Isreal Hagan, Gary Frenay, Doug Moncreif, and other special guests.

Protest planned for outside 95X studios

Some local listeners of the Howard Stern Show are not happy with 95X's decision to bail out of the show each morning at 10 a.m.

Calling the move "a slap in the face to listeners," Liverpool resident Rich Hatherill is planning a protest picket at 10 a.m. today outside the studios of 95X (WAQX).

Station management is referring all questions to its parent company Citadel Communications.

Matt Johnson is Florida bound

With winter approaching, Matt Johnson has picked an opportune time to head south.

Johnson, who left his job as morning show producer and sidekick on Hot 107-9 in Syracuse three years ago, is leaving WDKF in Dayton to program WXKB in Ft. Myers. He replaces Chris Cue who has been program director there since the station's debut 15 years ago.

Area choruses gather for holiday CD

Last year's collection of holiday music from area high school choruses was such a big hit that Sunny 102 (WZUN) morning man 'Big Mike' Fiss decided to serve up a second helping.

Big Mike's Christmastime in Syracuse, Volume 10 - Our Schools 2 went on sale this week at all area Wegmans for $6. Proceeds from the sale benefit the local Ronald McDonald House.

Last year's lot of 2,000 CDs sold out in two weeks, so 2,500 were pressed this year.

Beginning Friday morning, Rock 105 (WWDG) morning man Scorch will hole himself up in an RV until an 18 wheeler is filled with non-perishable food items, toiletries, and pet foods.

The 'Marathon for Meals' takes place at Fayetteville Town Centre where listeners are encouraged to stop by and donate items starting at 6 a.m. on Friday.

Underground Garage comes to TK-99/105

TK-99/105 (WTKW/WTKV) has added Litte Steven Van Zandt's Underground Garage to its schedule.

The weekly syndicated show features music from what Van Zandt calls "the five generations of rock" and is heard on 200 stations across the country. Van Zandt is a member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band and is also a regular on HBO's The Sopranos.

Dave Allen makes '40 Under 40' list

Dave Allen, Lite 105.9 (WLTI) morning man and program director, has been honored with a Syracuse 40 Under 40 award.

The awards are handed out to 40 professionals under the age of 40 for their business accomplishments and community involvement. Allen is the first radio personality to be honored in the 7-year history of the Syracuse event.
