TK-99 turns ten

This month marks the tenth anniversary of TK-99's first sign on. WTKW 99.5 FM, which debuted on November 9, 1992, started out as a country formatted station but switched to its current classic rock format a year later. Ron Curtis Jr., Dave Alexander, and Gary Dennis were among the on-air staff in the station's first year.

WAER moves into second place in public radio ratings

Jazz 88 (WAER) went from third to second place in the latest Arbitron rankings of public radio stations in the Syracuse market. In numbers released for the summer ratings period, WRVO held on to the top spot, but showed a 1.5 ratings point drop in the overall 12+ listener ratings.Check our ratings section for all the facts and figures.

Premiere pulls the plug on Rockline

After 20 years of rock radio interviews, Premiere Radio Networks announced it will cancel Rockline at the end of the year. Premiere, the country's largest syndicator of radio programming, is cutting 15 shows from its roster, a move that will eliminate 100 jobs. Rockline, hosted by Bob Coburn, is heard on 95X in Syracuse and 96.9 WOUR in Utica.

Steve Kroft speaks at Press Club ceremony

A who's who of the Syracuse press community was on hand Friday evening for the annual induction ceremony for the Syracuse Press Club's 'Wall of Distinction'. 60 Minutes co-editor Steve Kroft, a Syracuse University graduate and former reporter at channel 3 in the early 70s, gave the keynote address at the event held at the Wyndham Syracuse Hotel. Matt Mulcahy, WTVH TV 5 news anchor and Press Club president, served as master of ceremonies.

Press Club looking for 'Golden Quotes'

The Oswego County Press Club is taking nominations for its annual Golden Quotes Awards. Categories cover areas of journalism and marketing in both print and broadcast media. Nominations are due by November 8. The awards will be presented at the annual Press Club holiday meeting featuring guest host Amy Robbins of 93Q, 6 p.m. Wednesday, December 4, at Springside at Seneca Hill in Minetto.

WRVO raises $106,000 in fall fund drive

1,300 public radio listeners picked up their phones and helped make a difference during WRVO FM 90's eight-day fall on-air fundraising campaign. The calls generated a total of $106,000 in member contributions, and according to Matt Seubert, listener support coordinator for the WRVO network of stations, "Just as important as the dollars pledged was that we heard from over 450 new members." Listener financial support accounts for nearly 40% of WRVO's annual operating budget.

Lite 98.7 names new morning host

Mark Richards will be the new morning voice on Utica's Lite 98.7, replacing Randy Jay, a 13-year veteran of the station who left in late August. Richards hails from State College, PA where he has hosted the number one morning show in the market on WBHV. He has also worked at stations in Saginaw, MI, Erie, PA, as well as his hometown of Buffalo. Richards' takes over on November 14.

Dr. Jennifer Daniels shows up on Stern show

Syracuse native and former city mayoral candidate Dr. Jennifer Daniels popped up on the nationally syndicated Howard Stern Show this morning. In a broadcast phone call from the lobby of the building that houses Stern's New York City studios, Daniels told Howard that she was there to convince one of the show's interns, who is the 22-year-old daughter of a friend, to quit the show. Daniels also managed to squeeze in that she is the Green Party candidate in the race for Lt. Governor of New York.

Art Bell to retire at year's end

Saying that "it's not fair to listeners for me to be gone so much," talk show host Art Bell announced this morning that he will step down as host of his nationally syndicated show Coast to Coast at the end of the year. The reason for his departure is a chronic back condition that prevents him from sitting or standing for the four hour length of his daily show.
