Updated 11:40pm -- SYRACUSE -- CBS affiliate WTVH is back in service on channel 5, after a component failure forced some over-the-air and satellite viewers to find another way to watch CBS programming for a few days this week. The outages have been a recurring problem, and this is the first time management offered specifics on the situation.
UTICA -- Typical "small market" TV stations are often described as "revolving doors" in the TV news biz... many rookie reporters just want to build a good resume tape and move to a bigger market. WKTV, however, has long been an exception. Quite a few staffers have called WKTV home for years, even decades. Primary anchor Bill Worden just reached 35 years with the NBC affiliate.
OSWEGO -- NPR affiliate WRVO has a new Director of News and Public Affairs. The station says Catherine J. Loper has been appointed to the post, which had been vacant since Dave Bullard exited the station last fall. Loper brings 20 years of broadcast journalism experience to the table.
ALBANY -- The New York State Associated Press Broadcasters Association has named finalists for its 2011 radio and TV awards. NYSAPBA will reveal first place winners and "special mention" winners at its annual awards banquet in June. COLUMBIA, MD -- For the first time in nearly four years, the general public will get a glimpse of Arbitron's ratings data for the Syracuse market. This, after the radio ratings giant reportedly announced that it will no longer "embargo" publicly-released ratings in certain markets. But it's just a glimpse -- some stations will be left off the list.
UTICA-ROME -- Townsquare Media is looking to fill a vacancy left when Bob Cain exited the Brand Manager post at Oldiez 96.1 WODZ last month. ("Brand Manager," if you haven't figured it out, is the title formerly known as Program Director.) Updated 4/5 with additional details -- SYRACUSE -- On Wednesday, April 25 at 7pm, five local TV stations will be airing the same program at the same time. Two other stations will also run the program, at different times. It's an unprecedented movement to raise awareness of a very serious topic: child abuse. The one-hour "Protecting Our Children" special is a joint effort of the stations.
SYRACUSE -- Michel Martin, host of NPR's weekday talk show Tell Me More, is coming to Syracuse next Wednesday. Her appearance is part of the "Leaders in Communication" series at Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. The talk will be free and open to the public.
Updated 6:40pm -- SYRACUSE -- Longtime local talk radio host Jim Reith, whose 27-year run on WSYR AM/FM suddenly ended last October during a nationwide round of Clear Channel layoffs, will soon return to local airwaves. He'll host a daily 30-minute live talk show on WCNY-TV starting next month, and a three-hour daily radio show is slated to debut this fall.
