CNY native David Muir "most used" network reporter for 2nd year in a row

SYRACUSE -- For the second year in a row, Central New York native David Muir appeared on network TV news programs more than any other correspondent in the country.  During 2012, the former WTVH anchor's reports for ABC News clocked-in at just over 7 hours.  That's over 2½ hours more face time than 2012's runner-up, and over an hour more face time than Muir had in 2011.

Ethics question: Did WSTM properly handle disclosing Springfield's past employment?

SYRACUSE -- The big story for Syracuse news outlets on Tuesday was the arraignment of Roger Springfield.  While working as media director for Syracuse University athletics, Springfield is accused of secretly videotaping male student athletes in the locker room after a number of games.  Before working at SU, Springfield was sports director at WSTM-TV from 1982 to 1993.  But, some viewers noticed, WSTM's newscasts didn't mention Springfield's former employment at the station.  Was that a big deal?  We asked a nationally-recognized expert to weigh in.

FCC reinstates WKAJ construction permit

ST. JOHNSVILLE -- Back in 2012, it seemed as if 1120 WKAJ would be the radio station that disappeared before it got started.  The FCC cancelled the construction permit and deleted WKAJ from its call sign database after owner Cranesville Block Company missed a key deadline, that had already been extended by two months.  But tonight, there's new hope for the station, as the FCC considers new "information not previously before us."

Longtime WHCU personality Don Martin dies at 88

ITHACA -- Longtime WHCU talk radio host and former GM Don Martin died on Monday near Seattle, WA.  He was 88 years old.  An Air Force veteran who served during World War II, Martin joined the station in 1947.  He retired in 1979, but continued hosting his "Column Comment" feature for many years afterward.

Former WIBX hosts offer "SportsWatch" post-mortems

Ex-WSTM sportscaster accused of unlawfully recording locker room video

SYRACUSE -- Former WSTM sportscaster Roger Springfield is accused of illegally videotaping more than 100 male student athletes in Syracuse University locker rooms, during his time as head of media for the school's athletics department. That's the word from authorities today, a little over a month since Springfield was fired from the post.

Former WSYR-TV meteorologist Eichorn lands new media gig

SYRACUSE -- Longtime local broadcast meteorologist Dave Eichorn has a new job.  Today, the Syracuse Media Group announced it has hired Eichorn to create forecasts and provide analysis of local weather conditions for syracuse.com and the Post-Standard newspaper.  Eichorn tells CNYRadio.com he'll also continue to provide forecasts on the radio every weekday on Y94 (WYYY).

WIBX ends long-running local "SportsWatch" program

UTICA-ROME -- After decades as a staple on the weekday schedule at news/talker WIBX 950, the final buzzer has sounded on SportsWatch.  CNYRadio.com just got word of the show's cancellation as the final show was ending.  Readers who were tuned-in said co-hosts Jeff Monaski and Ray Rich ended the final show -- an abbreviated 30-minute edition -- with a brief tribute to the many people who hosted SportsWatch over the years.

Utica-Rome Arbitron ratings update adds Townsquare stations

UTICA-ROME -- Earlier this week, we were surprised by the absence of ratings data for Townsquare Media's four radio stations in the latest update from Arbitron.  But we've since heard that Townsquare still subscribes to "the book" in this market.  We checked, and it appears Arbitron has updated the "topline" data to include the cluster, which includes perennial market leader Big Frog 104 (WFRG).
