UTICA-ROME -- After actor Stephen Baldwin's appearance at the Boilermaker Expo in Utica on Saturday, he needed access to a studio to co-host his nationally-syndicated "Baldwin / McCullough" radio show. Much to the surprise of Townsquare Media staff, Baldwin stopped by to set-up shop in the studio of news/talker 950 WIBX.
UTICA -- Nationally, the name Robert Earle might ring a bell as the former host of GE College Bowl on NBC from 1962-1970. But before he "went network," Bob Earle started his career in Utica. His was the very first voice heard on WKTV in 1949, and Earle recently returned to the NBC affiliate's Smith Hill studios.
SYRACUSE -- Jason Benetti logs most of his on-air hours as play-by-play announcer for the Syracuse Chiefs. If you're not a baseball fan, you might know his name from televised local high-school and college sports. You might not have known much else about Benetti until now -- he's this week's Syracuse NewTimes cover story.
UTICA/ROME -- The long-anticipated arrival of ESPN Radio on the FM dial in Utica is a step closer to reality. The FCC recently approved a request to move translator W256AJ from the roof of Hotel Utica to a more advantageous perch atop Smith Hill.
OSWEGO -- Sunny 102.1 (WZUN) is going full-power on its namesake frequency, but an observant CNYRadio.com reader tells us the 106.1 signal from translator W291BU in Fulton has recently been switched to a simulcast of sister station TK99/105 (WTKW/WTKV). We checked with Mimi Griswold, VP/Programming for Galaxy Communications and she tells us the change is temporary, but no word on when it'll go back to simulcasting Sunny.
SYRACUSE -- After nearly 26 years of hosting Sunday Night Blues for WAER 88.3FM, local blues musician Tom Townsley has just four shows left. Townsley has a new job lined up, so his last show for WAER will be July 29.
SYRACUSE -- From the "better late than never" file, former Clear Channel digital marketing director Julie MacConnell has a new job. While she's no longer working in broadcasting, it appears her new role will keep her in regular contact with local media outlets.
UTICA-ROME -- There's a new evening show on Townsquare Media country station Big Frog 104 (WFRG). The syndicated Taste of Country Nights debuted last night, bumping Premiere's Lia at Night to the overnight shift. WFRG is among more than 30 Townsquare stations clearing the new evening show.
ITHACA -- Ten years of hard work are finally paying off for the leaders of Ithaca Community Radio. The non-profit, community-owned station has launched its own programming lineup, after years of simulcasting public stations from places like Geneva and Binghamton.
