SYRACUSE -- It was exactly eleven years ago today that CNYRadio.com posted its very first story. This year's celebration is pretty low-key compared to the multi-day series of special features offered for the 10th anniversary last year, but I still wanted to take the opportunity to mark the occasion.
UTICA-ROME -- Gary "Big Poppa" Spears probably had no idea what he was in for this morning, when he mentioned that today, Leap Year Day, also happens to be the birthday of rapper Ja Rule. The rapper, serving time at Mid-State Correctional Facility in nearby Marcy, heard the mention on-air, called-in and chatted with Spears live on Kiss-FM (WSKS/WSKU).
SYRACUSE -- Subway spokesman Jared Fogel? He's yesterday's news. 93Q (WNTQ) morning co-host Ted Long has lost more than 100 pounds since September, and he's going to show off the giant jeans he used to wear, tonight on CBS 5 News at 5:30.
SYRACUSE -- Long gone are the days of weekly local televised bowling matches, but many fans still remember Marty Piraino. Known for his frequent appearances as a competitor and a host on programs like "Syracuse Bowls" and "WSTM Challenge Bowling" from the 1960s through the 1990s, Piraino died on Tuesday.
SYRACUSE -- After a few weeks off, The Irish Power Hour has a new radio home in Syracuse... and a chance to pick up some new fans in the Utica market. Starting this Sunday, co-hosts Sean Johnston and Cabrina Gilbert bring their weekly hour-long show to Galaxy's TK99/105 (WTKW/WTKV). It'll be simulcast on Utica's 96.9 WOUR.
UTICA-ROME -- It appears that WRUY 1450 is closer to getting back on the air. We've received reports of the station running a loop of "national" PSAs over the weekend, along with an ID for "WRUY 1450AM Rome, Utica, Syracuse, NY."
SYRACUSE -- Former local TV news anchor Maureen Green returned to the tube this morning, but not to the anchor desk, and not to her longtime home at CBS 5 (WTVH). Rather, she appeared on ABC affiliate NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV) as the subject of a sweeps piece about purchasing prescription eyeglasses online.
OSWEGO -- From the "better late than never" file, there's an explanation behind the three-week disappearance of 96.7 WWLF-FM. Remember that really windy day last month? The station's owner says winds on January 17 were strong enough to bring down the transmitter tower. Since early this month, WWLF-FM has been transmitting from the Mexico tower of sister station WVOA-FM.
SYRACUSE -- Weekdays on The Score 1260 (WSKO), it's Mike Lindsley on middays, followed by Brent Axe in the afternoon. But Mike was talking with a different Brent earlier this month at the Carrier Dome -- specifically, longtime network TV sportscaster Brent Musburger. And you'll find a couple other familiar faces in the background...
SYRACUSE -- Six weeks after joining the lineup at FM Newsradio 106.9 and 570 WSYR, afternoon talk show host Bob Lonsberry is making front page news. A profile on the Rochester-based host appeared on the front page of the Syracuse Post-Standard today. Former afternoon host Jim Reith responded on Facebook.
