CORTLAND -- Former local radio and event disc jockey David McGrady has passed away. According to an obituary which appeared in the Syracuse Post Standard on Wednesday, McGrady, 44, had been battling colon cancer. He worked at radio stations in Cortland and Homer following his graduation from SUNY Geneseo.
SYRACUSE -- Among TV stations, it was a fairly even split between channels 3 and 9 for the 2011 Best of Syracuse awards. On the radio side, 93Q (WNTQ) is the big winner. The awards were announced in today's edition of the weekly Syracuse NewTimes newspaper.
SPRINGFIELD, MA -- A little over five months since Jim Tortora left the news director's office at NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV), he has a new job. He'll be leading the news department of ABC affiliate WGGB in Springfield, Massachusetts. In addition to the WGGB newscasts, the station also produces a 10:00pm newscast for a Fox affiliate carried on the station's 40.2 digital subchannel.
SYRACUSE -- You may have heard on the air (or read on CNYRadio.com's Facebook page), that 93Q (WNTQ) morning co-host Ted Long underwent gastric bypass surgery last week. We're glad to report he returned to work yesterday. According to a report published today, Long has already lost nearly 25 pounds -- and says he wants to shed another 125.
ITHACA -- This week, we're heading more than half a century back in time, for another look into the extensive collection of longtime Ithaca broadcaster Rudy Paolangeli. Although Rudy may be best known for his long-standing connections with WHCU, this photo goes back even further.
SYRACUSE -- For the second time in a single season, Perry Noun's golf talk show, Tee Time with the Pronoun, is changing stations again. After starting the 2011 season on ESPN Radio 97.7/100.7 (WTLA/WSGO/W249BC/W261AC), the Saturday morning program will be cut in half and moved back to the AM dial, to Cumulus Media's The Score 1260 (WSKO).
VERONA -- Chapter 22 of the Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) has opened registration for its annual Expo. Most of this year's events will take place on October 5, at the Expo's usual location, Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona. Registation is free and open to the public -- you can sign up and find out more about all the day's offerings on the SBE22 Expo website.
SYRACUSE/UTICA-ROME -- Galaxy Communications is looking for a new morning host for its K-Rock (WKRL/WKRH/WKLL) trio of stations. A job posting, which appears to have been posted by a radio consulting firm, was posted on a national trade website this morning.
CHICAGO -- Formerly of WFBL and WNTQ, Alan Bishop recently won Radio Ink magazine's "GM of the Year" award, for his work with the Finger Lakes Radio Group in Geneva. The award was presented to Bishop at the NAB-RAB Radio Show last week.
SYRACUSE -- Observant CNYRadio.com readers have noticed that CNY Talk Radio (WFBL/Syracuse, WMCR/Oneida, WUTI/Utica) has recently made some changes to its weekday lineup. The addition of an afternoon news block has pushed some talk hosts to different timeslots.
