POTW: Vintage WKAL Sign Discovered (2011)

Updated at 8:00am - ROME -- Any longtime residents of the Copper City are being asked for help in piecing together the history of a vintage "WKAL On The Air" sign recently found "stashed away in the rafters" at the Capitol Theatre.  WKAL used to be located within the theatre.  Officials want to restore the sign, but they also hope to hear from anyone who may know more about the exact placement of this sign when it was active.

WSYR Skipping Weekday Yankees Games

SYRACUSE -- Local Yankees fans on Twitter seem to be upset and surprised, but radio insiders may not be so shocked to learn Clear Channel's Syracuse cluster is no longer offering radio coverage of certain weekday afternoon New York Yankees games.  That's likely because FM Newsradio 106.9 and 570 WSYR, which carries the Yankees games, is also an affiliate of Rush Limbaugh.

YNN's Bill Carey Wins Emmy Award

SYRACUSE -- At about the same time the Syracuse Press Club unveiled its latest slate of award winners, YNN senior reporter Bill Carey was awarded a New York Emmy for his work on the April 2, 2010 special program "Deadly Delusion," marking the one-year anniversary of a mass shooting in which 14 people were killed in Binghamton.

Demolition a Step Closer for Old WFBL Buildings

SYRACUSE -- More than two years after we reported plans were approved to demolish the former WFBL buildings on South Warren Street... we've learned apparently they weren't totally approved.  But now, two more layers of red tape have been peeled away, making it more likely the buildings will soon be cleared to make way for a parking lot.

SYRACUSE -- Congratulations tonight to NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV) co-anchors Rod Wood and Carrie Lazarus.  They'll soon be regarded among the likes of nationally-known journalists like Walter Cronkite and Barbara Walters.  They're in the 2011 class being inducted into the New York State Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame this June.

UTICA/ROME -- Almost eight years since Clear Channel shut down the newsroom at ABC affiliate WUTR Channel 20, the station's current management announced today plans to revive the newsroom across the street from longtime market dominator WKTV.  Local newscasts will also be added to the lineups of Fox 33 (WFXV) and MyNetwork 11 (WPNY-LP).
