Nick Caplan, longtime PD and morning host of 95.3/103.9 The Dinosaur (WSEN) announced today was his last day at the locally-owned classic top 40 station. Across the studio desk, news anchor Chris Weidman said he's been contemplating retirement for some time, and Caplan's exit prompted him to hang up his headphones as well.
SYRACUSE - "And that's the latest from The Weather Outside." CNY Central Chief Meteorologist Wayne Mahar announced today he's getting ready to call it a career after 36 years of predicting local weather.
OHIO -- Peter C. Cavanaugh, a former radio executive whose career started in 1957 at Syracuse's WNDR when he was still in high school, has died. Word comes via public social media posts by family members, along with at least one radio station report from Flint, Michigan, where he spent most of his career.
UTICA-ROME -- Townsquare Media is taking applications for a new Brand Manager and morning co-host for news/talker 950 WIBX. We're told Jeff Monaski is moving onto something new after 20 years with WIBX and its sister stations. The job posting says candidates must have at least 5 years of full-time on-air experience.
SYRACUSE -- The recent death of longtime Syracuse broadcast journalist Dave White got one of his former colleagues thinking. Former 570 WSYR talk host Jim Reith took to Facebook to reminisce about how much the Syracuse news media scene has changed -- in not-so-good ways -- over the past few decades.
SYRACUSE -- Local broadcasters are mourning the death of one of their own tonight. Longtime radio and TV newsman Dave White passed away Monday at the age of 71. Younger journalists and audiences may recall White as the former media relations contact at SUNY-ESF.
SYRACUSE -- Following the news that husband and wife Niko Tamurian and Farah Jadran are leaving CNYCentral, there's word on at least one replacement. The cluster housing NBC3 (WSTM), CBS5 (WTVH) and CW6 (WSTM-DT 3.2) says Tommy Sladek will take over as Sports Director. There's also more details on where Tamurian is headed next.
SYRACUSE -- Many wondered how Rush Limbaugh's death earlier this year might impact talk radio. But it doesn't seem to be an issue for Newsradio 570 & 106.9 WSYR. For the second Nielsen ratings report in a row, the iHeart news/talker has bested its sister station, former longtime market leader, B104.7 (WBBS).
UTICA/ROME -- Townsquare Media's 5-station cluster takes the top 5 spots in the publicly-available Spring 2021 ratings released this week by The Nielsen Company. As usual, country Big Frog 104 (WFRG) leads the way, with more than double the Persons 12+ audience of #2-ranked Lite 98.7 (WLZW).
He'll be remembered by younger broadcasters as a professor at SUNY Oswego. Some may remember him from Syracuse's channel 9, when it was WNYS-TV. Others around the country knew him as a kids' show host, a weatherman, an anchor, a news director and a general manager. Jerry Condra died this past week at the age of 85.
